A nut in a culinary context can be any edible kernel surrounded by a hard shell. It's a much looser definition of nuts than that in botany terms. Nuts often have a high oil content, and many are used for oil production (e.g. peanut), as well as for snacking and cooking. Some examples are almonds, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, pistachios, and Macadamia nuts.
