No great chef was ever been born, they are always made. Thankfully, culinary skills are learnt and never inborn. So if a chef at The Hilton could make it, so can you, isn’t it? Chefs have come to be great chefs with hard work, starting out by learning how to cook by reading and following instructions from a written recipe. The very process of making a simple dish by following a simple time tested recipe could be an immensely enjoyable experience and who knows; you may begin to enjoying cooking and discover your culinary skills.

Everyone reads magazines, you must have certainly come across a mouth watering dish in one of those magazines along with the recipe, but always thought that it was too complicated for you to follow and try to cook. You must have also thought that creating something like the dish in the photograph would be an impossible task considering your lack of culinary skills. Breaking the myth, magazine recipes are very simple to cook; ingredients are commonly available and not expensive at all.

Cookbooks, yes, are expensive. But when you are beginning to train, you don’t need to invest in them. Free recipes are available at a lot of places, from your grandma’s cupboard to various websites on the internet. You could graduate to cookbooks when you become a connoisseur of culinary skills and tastes. Even at this advanced stage, free recipes would still be available, albeit a little more complicated and requiring more of your time and resources. The internet could be a very good resource for various recipes classified on the basis of countries and cuisines.

There are more ways of learning to cook great dishes – for one you could watch the cook shows on the television which also showcase the procedure and minute details with tips. You could note down the recipes and try them out at your own leisure. For the more interested, there are bound to be a few cookery classes conducted in your area. Learning to cook, not only makes you self sufficient but it would contribute immensely to improving your family’s eating habits. It would also promote the junior members of your family to learn alongside and promote self reliance. Sharing recipes and the results of it with your friends and neighbors can be wonderful and improves camaraderie.

Can you imagine calling some friends over for dinner and serving them spicy chicken curry and Indian pancakes instead of the regular hamburgers, hotdogs or a pizza. Would they be impressed…! Ask yourself and kick start yourself.
