My grandmother made them from scratch when I was a kid. My mother would go down to her house on Saturday afternoon following a day of making them. She would return with two large roasting pans full of them. We would have them for dinner Saturday night, then breakfast Sunday morning. They are just loaded fat-carbo bombs, but really, really tasty and quite a "comfort food" for me. We always fried them with onions after boiling.
Mrs. T's makes a passable, easy to store and cook frozen version.
I made them in my younger days with eggroll wrappers.
If you are anywhere near a Russian Orthodox church you can usually get them as a special sale item. Call the priest or watch for signs. |
