nothing tops good ol' Oscar Mayer weiners and Hormel chili - no beans. On a bun or just mix and eat!

Onion stuffed onions

Not much cheaper than onions. Half onions, use outer two rings as a shell, chop the rest, saute in a white sauce, refill shells, bake until top is brown and onion is soft.

Cheap.

I think I'd have to vote for something like Eggs Benedict, but could be convinced of better/cheaper egg applications (crepes? a souffle?).

I am at times absolutely dumbfounded by how little we need to pay for eggs. Considering their value in the kitchen, I don't see how anything else comes close to their bang for the buck.

Good ideas, everyone. Here's my vote. It's extremely cheap, and you almost always have all the ingredients on hand anyway.

Potato Latkes:

2 large potatoes, peeled
1/2 medium onion
salt and pepper
butter
flour
1 egg
vegetable oil

Grate the potatoes and the onions finely. Salt and pepper the hell out of them. Add 1 egg, and mix thoroughly. Add about two tbsp. flour or matzo meal, mix.

Fry in a half and half combination of butter and vegetable oil on medium heat until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels, and serve with sour cream.

the engineer's answer was found in 1943, when there were actual shortages of nutrients which loomed as a gating factor on war production.

I won't quote the results, because I can't assure that the relative cost-numbers are the same 64 years later.

You all are too funny!! Are you sure you are engineers??? If you are you are some of the best out of the box engineers I have come across!! That is a compliment! Cheap meals: eggs with anything in them scrambled, called it what you want the 1943 cheap meal is still relative cheap by today's costs( I know what Dad called it), potato soup and of course chili or ham & beans(a pot can last a week)! Thanks for letting come to your site. Smile

WENDY'S is a restaurant. It's called a fast food restaurant. Fast food restaurants (you are getting the explanation) are restaurants that serve you good food -FAST! May I stress that. It is a Fast Food Restaurant. And it is so good. But I bet you have an addiction to some restaurant, fast food or not, right? Big smile
