I have a small cast iron frying pan that I'm trying to season. I cleaned the pan by immersing it in a lye solution, wiped it clean then washed it in warm soapy water. I first tried seasoning it with vegetable oil - cooked in in a 300 degree F oven for one hour, wiped it and cooked it another hour. The inside was covered with spotches that were black. I recoated the pan with vegetable oil and cooked it another hour. The splotches were still there and the sides of the pan were sticky.
I recleaned it in the lye solution, wiped clean and washed it as before. This time I used Crisco, but had the same result.
What am I doing wrong. |

the stickiness is probably from the oil(s) partially converting.
no ideas on the splotches - that sounds unusual - but the "std" seasoning method is:
melt a solid vegetable shortening
apply thin layer, inside & out
place in 350-400'F oven, upside down, for one hour
turn right side up, wipe any excess, allow pan to cool in oven. |
