Native Crayfish yes American crayfish NO! However, it maybe illegal to use traps without a licence!

If you check the EA regulations, you will find that it is illegal to catch (any method) or trap any species of Crayfish: indigenous or foreign in the UK without a licence.

The licencing paperwork process is a nightmare to deal with.

It is also illegal to return any accidentally caught Crayfish back to the water that were caught in alive. You are not permitted to use Crayfish as bait (alive or dead), and you are not allowed to kill them without a licence.

If you are out angling for the traditional species of freshwater fish in the UK, and are unlucky enough to hook a Crayfish, you could end up in a right mess regarding legalities.

However, some enterprising anglers have overcome this problem by Hair rigging a bait below the main hook, allowing the Crayfish to delibrately take the bait, and then playing the Crayfish out rather slowly, presenting larger fish that prey upon the Crayfish the opportunity of a free meal.

As for killing Crayfish, opinion these days is to place the live Crayfish into the freezer for about 30 minutes, which places them into a natural type hibernation stasis before popping them into a pot of boiling water.
