Article Digest:
I'm getting hammered with traffic right now and I just upgraded my service to the maximum that I can in an attempt to keep this site alive.

If anyone wants to help out a little, I figure a dollar here or there will add up enough to help out. So if anyone wants, please make a paypal donation to help the website survive this.

Paypal (cash only): cooking@cookingforengineers.com
Unfortunately, I don't want to pay the fees for credit card payments, so I will have to deny any credit card donations. (If you don't want to donate, but want me to get a warm and fuzzy feeling, you can do a credit card donation - I'll know you care, but deny... unless it's a HUGE donation, then I'll take it!)

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet since I receive 404 errors trying to read the comments, but you are experiencing what is known as the 'Slashdot effect'. An article was posted on Slashdot (http://slashdot.org), a geek news and discussion site, about your Cooking for Engineers site along with the link. Your site content seems to indicate you're 'one of us'. Hang in there, the traffic from Slashdot will drop off in a day or two. And congratulations, you seem to be surviving the traffic; Slashdot has been known to completely overwhelm many sites mentioned in their articles.

Oh, and stop by and read the News for Nerds.

You've just been SlashDoted (http://www.slashdot.org) in a few days your traffic will probably return to normal, right now your site is being visted by every geek on the internet.

http://dreamhost.com/ = cheap, competent, excellent support. I use them myself but am otherwise unaffiliated.

It could be worse, you could labor in complete anonymity without any thanks for your efforts.

Regarding cheap hosting, you should consider net pro hosting. $6 a month for unlimited transfer. Here are there plans: http://www.netprohosting.com/plans.php
Here are network details: http://www.netprohosting.com/network.php

In the interest of full disclosure, I know the guy that runs it (I work with him). However, I don't get a price break from him and I am a happy customer.

I occassionally will sell some of my unused gear on ebay (computer parts, camera equipment, books, etc.) and if I accept a credit donation of $5 now, I will be paying 3% to paypal on every transaction I make in the future. In the long run, it doesn't seem worth it...

I think paypal allows each user to have a personal (non-credit card) and a premier or buisness account, you could set up a seperate one just for accepting those card donations . . .
