Do I line up kitchen backsplash tiles with edge of counter or edge of cabinet? The edge of my counter is 5 inches longer than the edge of my cabinet. I have 4 inches of drywall after that and then the sliding doors. What's the standard for backsplash alignment?

The easiest way to lay tile is to have the edge line up on one side or the other like you are suggesting, but I think the most aesthetically pleasing arrangement is actually to center it (requiring cuts on the tiles on both the top and the bottom). This requires twice the labor on the edges so is not often done except in custom homes or a by a master tiler (who cares about his reputation) or by people laying their own tiles who tend towards perfectionism. |
