I was browsing The Chef's Catalog last night and started to read about the Vita-Mix Professional Series Blender....

"Ordinary blenders can't begin to approach the speed...of this extraordinary machine."...

Wow. Cool. I wonder how many RPM's this baby will make....

"...and a motor that reaches speeds of 240 mph."

Huh?!?! A heavy duty motor traveling at 240 mph is definitely not something I want flying around my kitchen.

I have a Vita Mix Super 5000 for years, as I mentioned in other posts, and it is one fantastic blender. You can scramble two eggs on a low setting or blend up two quarts of whatever else comes to mind on high. See the Vita Mix website. The pitchers are polycarbonate--you can't break them.

But the 240mph motor hasn't gone through your window yet? Wink

Mind you, I'm not dissing the product. But rather, the ad copy. If you're talking about a motor, RPM and Torque may be relevant. But not MPH.

They are talking about blade tip speed. It is a wonderful blender.

I'm sure it is a wonderful blender. Yet, any claim of a motor speed measured in MPH is meaningless. You may well be correct in assuming that they're talking about the blade tip speed. That would be my guess as well. But that's not the motor.

The output of an automobile engine is never measured in MPH. Nor is that the case with any electric motor.
