our kids are 'into cooking' - but not so much into the hi-tech / hi-demand issues of maintaining their knives. so I set out to make their kitchen life a bit easier adopting Chad Ward's Convex Grind theory to a home spun mouse pad knife sharpening doohickey.

Chad Ward is a respected authority in knife stuff; you can find his tutorial - a very worthwhile read - here:
https://forums.egullet.org/topic/26036-knife-maintenance-and-sharpening/

the construction is maple + stainless/brass hardware.
the wing nuts allow the user to clamp any grit wet/dry paper on the sharpener.
finish is polyurethane.
mousepad 3mm thick (source: Staples)
dimensions approx. 8" length overall by 5.5" wide; takes an abrasive sheet 175x140mm (6.9"x5.5")
cute inclusion: pivoting 'protractor' angle guide for min/max angles.
