I nominate the spammer

Yeah, I think I've asked him to constrain his posts to the one thread that he has. I haven't decided yet whether or not to terminate his threads in "Anything Goes" (since Anything Goes!)...

Michael -
I did freebie sysop work on CompuServe for, oh, two or three lifetimes.
we dealt with the "advertising" issue quite regularly.

as you can now see, there is an entire cottage "get rich off the Internet" industry dealing with:

"I love to cook and nothing cuts better than my Cutco knives, so come on down to my website and buyeverything."

"I was cleaning my dishwasher ... and discovered my parts business..."

not convinced?

try these, from today.
you're not going to have enough time to delete all this stuff now that the bot spammer have found this URL "friendly" to embedded advertising

Natural products are always the best when keeping a diet. I have a discount pharmacy two blocks away from my house that has chocolate for diabetics and all sort of goodies with no sugar at all. I stopped sweetening my coffee but if I really need it I use some saccharine.

There is a difference between aluminum oxide and alumina oxide. Manufacturers usually say they use alumina on their products because this is not poisoning. Aluminum is highly dangerous if ingested for longer periods. Aluminum is an essential nutrients, but in our society there seems to be a much greater chance of getting too much aluminum rather than too little. Here are some common sources of aluminum that you need to avoid if your hair test shows high aluminum: antiperspirants and underarm deodorants, aluminum cookware (especially dangerous if acid foods like tomatoes are cooked), beverages from aluminum cans, municipal drinking water which often has aluminum compounds added, baking powders, bleached flour, processed cheese, some table salts, some antacids, and breathing in dust when sanding with aluminum oxide sandpaper.

I had the same problem, but I am a lucky person and my grandfather is an expert in fixing any kind of heating appliance and he never studies any engineering or anything else. As stated above it is quite hard to fix it if you do not know what you are doing and it is best to call a specialist.

I have noticed some really great knives on the tele-shopping channel and I was thinking to ask for your advice. The knives do not have a familiar brand but they seem to do what they were designed to: cut cut cut. The brand is called Shaolin, maybe you have heard of it.

I'm part of a cooking group. Me and some of my neighbors dedicated too much time for our careers and neglected to learn to cook. Having a family means that fast-food is out and the healthy home cooked meal is in. We're attending some classes we like to refer to as fake college and I hope I'll be able to cook the famous orange duck by the end of the year.

Sounds delicious but I doubt that my husband will wait two days for it. I went to a fake college for chefs and I learned a thing or two about cooking. It was a class preparing people for serious cooking lessons. Ever since I always try new recipes. This one will be on my list for the summer. I already noted it. Who knows when I want to impress my mother-in-law and cook her up a meal she'll never forget...

No, no... I totally agree that there's a clear spammer industry, but there's a fine line between allowing someone to promote something they like or their little business and allowing spammers. We have a very small bot problem as compared to two years ago - ever since I implemented the letter + 1 confirmation code that everyone emails me and tells me is evil and I should be shot for.

Most of the spammers are real people who just put urls in their signature or whatever. I usually allow it until a few posts go up and it's clear that they aren't saying anything of value - then I remove the links. I don't like the idea of removing posts (although I've done it on occasion when it's clearly a spam only message).

I usually run through all the forums every evening and answer the questions that I can and clear out some of the junk like the ones you pointed out. Invariably I miss some because I read so fast I don't realize it's cut and paste BS (like the fake college - I saw it and went, wtf? then got distracted and left it in)

I think the spam is at a managable level right now, but if it picks up more, I've got a few more tricks up my sleeve that I've implemented at http://www.fanpop.com - I just don't like mucking around with phpbb code
